How much damage did I do?

While driving my 1970 95 I noticed what appeard to be clutch slip. From previous experience I knew that the freewheeling mechanism can give you the same symptoms. I'd pulled the engine on a '74 Sonett, replaced the clutch and put it back together, only to find the problem was still there.
Anyway, I disnegaged the freewheeling and the car seemed to run OK. A few miles later I noticed the "slipping": problem was coming back and the engine was freewheeling. When I stopped and opened the hood I found the freewheeling arm half in the middle. I pulled it back to disengage the freewheeeling and it drove the last couple of miles OK. Now I'm wondering what's torn up and how to fix it. Is there some way to determine if the problem is in the clutch or the freewheeling? I kind of like the freewheeling, but will disable it for now rather than pull the whole engine/tranny out. What's the best way to disable it so that the arm doesn't vibrate back into the middle, as it appears to have done today?
