Only the type III is a twelve cog. Types I & II use the brass/bronze bearing/ seal housing that fits into the block w/ O-rings [ thru '76 ]. I believe the housing is much larger than the bearing of the type III [ '77 thru '80 ], thus they are not directly interchangeable. I have seen several versions of non-factory replacement WPs that use a different version of nut or bolt to hold the impeller. I believe it is possible to change the jackshaft to an 8-cog and use an 8-cog WP shaft with the type III bearings and seals. The 8-cog shafts seem to be relatively indestructable. You may have a type I shaft and impeller with type III bearing and seals. I have not actually tried to interchange the parts between the three types, but respond relative to your question relative to my experiences. I have no idea what Chris is talking about in relation to the 'wear' point. In all versions the bottom of the pump rides in a machined bore in the block.
