Sorry I'm responding to this so late, but you're right timeing is critical on a two-stroke - mostly, because you want to avoid pre-ignition or detination. It sounds like marbles when you acclerate hard and worse case you can put a hole right through the middle of a piston. I use a strobeoscope timed off the #2 (middle spark plug lead). If this is a new car for you, check to make sure the distributor type matches your year and model - I've found them to sometimes be switched. If so, you may want to check with others Saabers to see if it's better to time to Distibuter specs of engine specs. I also make sure the timing mark for TDC on the pulley actually matches up to true Top Dead Center of the #2 piston. Finally, if you have vacum advance, one last check I do is to make sure it hasn't rusted or frozen up. So with the distributor cap removed and rubber cover off, disconnect the vacum line off the manifold and suck on it in order to make sure your distibutor plate and points rotate.
If it doesn't, your vacum advance is locked up and this can cause problems as well.
It seems you have an instruction manual so follow the instructions for timing. You can do the Static Timing with a light or Stroboscope the method for each is different.
I've owned a '66 Monte Carlo since 1971 and unfortunately learned the hard way just how important timing can be. However, once you get the plugs, carbs and timing all in tune -it's one terrific experience!
All the best,
Robin
