Pinion shaft nut?

One possibility: pinion shaft nut loosens up with time and lets pinion get loose, causing noisy diff. I guess that if you catch it in time (before pinion starts bouncing around and chews up the gear teeth) you can just re-torque it. I had one that was only finger-tight!
But to get at it you have to take the transaxle out of the car, and if you've gone to all that work and have a spare $1000 or so cluttering up your wallet, you might as well get the bearings redone anyway...
