I was reminded this afternoon of one of the more serious dangers facing our older V4s. Back in the late 60's Saab had a recall on the famous FoMoCo carbs because the fuel intake nipple had a troublesome habit of working loose and spraying gas fresh from the fuel pump all over the engine compartment, often resulting in an engine compartment conflagration of devastating proportions. Ask and old Saab head and they'll share some tale or another of smoking cars and burnt wiring harnesses. In fact, my current winter rat came into my possession some years back after this very fate befell it.
So there I was removing the old FoMoCo carb on my '71 96 in preparation for installing a shinny new Weber 34 ICH. I loosened the fuel line clamp and discovered the hose to be rather tightly affixed to the intake nipple. So I wiggled and pulled and twisted and yanked (the fuel line that is) with all I had and low and behold the nipple came off with the line.
So please, if your still using one of these FoMoCo carbs, check the fuel intake nipple and fix it before you get a chance to use that fire extinguisher you've had stashed behind your seat for the past 3 years.
On an associated topic, where does one wire the Weber 34 ICH solenoid to. Is there a commonly used circuit I should be attaching this to and what happens if I don't connect it to anything.
Thanks,
Jonathan Schaller
