I put the car on a lift at my tech class, and had a look. When I cut the wheel all the way to the left, the spring rubs up agains the tire (drivers side). The tires that are on the car have been on there since I bought it. The tire size is 165x15. Could these be too wide for the car? The radial tires seem to balloon out a little more than the bias ply's that probably came on the car originally. The spring also has a curvature to it as it spans the area from the lower perch to the upper. Could the spring be sagging a little with age?
The car is from the South West, in above average condition with 66,000 original miles. I changed the rear wheel bearings, but they really didn't seem to need it, along with the condition of everything else that I have had a chance to look at, I think the car has been well maintained. I also grabbed both front wheels at 12 and 6 and tried to shake them and look for slop or play, and there was absolutely none.
I'll have a look at the rotor when I get a chance. Thanks for the lead.
If that is the problem, I 'll turn them when I take the car to class. Wouldn't I feel a vibration through the pedal or front end if that where the problem?
Thanks,
Randy
