I dunno, sounds a bit flakey, as if maybe your new ball joints were defective to begin with. I replaced mine last summer and did not have to do anything special to secure the post -- I just bolted them in.
The old OEM type was adjustable for play, according to the shop manual, although they made it sound as if this wasn't a routine maneuver. The replacements I got were sealed and non-adjustable, and didn't need any adjusting.
Then again, are you sure it's the ball joints? I have heard that it's normal to have some axial play in them when they're unloaded (car jacked up.) And you must be hitting some REALLY big bumps if they unload the ball stems enough to move in and out, what with the full weight of the car and the full pressure of the springs pressing down on top of them. Have you checked to see if anything else in the front suspension might be loose or bad? Bolts? Bushings? Spring seats?
