Well, if you're hot for originality, your best bet would be to get some salvaged OEM units from one of the suppliers listed in the classifieds, and have them rebuilt. That's what I did with mine. The local starter/alternator rebuild shop had no problems getting parts or doing the work -- they said all the components are standard Bosch and easy to get (although I believe they said they have to source the starter solenoids from South America now.)
IIRC it cost me about $200 total for both rebuilds, but if your rebuild shop is good they will come back literally like new, and since they are OEM they look and fit perfectly.
If you want uprated units, here's what I've been told (bear in mind that I have NOT tried these options personally, but they sound plausible) --
-- Easiest alternator swap is the Bosch unit from an early Saab 900 -- should plug right in and has higher output than the 35a/h original. Check with West of Sweden -- they usually keep a few of these around and can tell you exactly how to hook it up.
-- Starter for a 2.6-liter Ford Capri V6 is probably the closest match you'll find. This V6 engine and Saab's V4 both originated from Ford's Cologne plant and have many dimensions in common. I think the Capri unit has an aluminum nose, which saves a few pounds vs. the older cast-iron Saab starter. Again, if you check with West of Sweden, they might have one on the shelf.
