If it will idle OK when the choke is pulled out but won't when the choke is NOT pulled out, then (as kskid said) the idle mixture is too lean. Possible causes of that:
-- Idle mixture screw adjusted too lean
-- Air leak (at the carb base, vacuum hoses, etc.)
-- Carburetor's idle jet clogged
There are others, too, but these seem most likely to me.
You didn't mention what carb you have, so it's hard to tell you exactly how to proceed. But ks is right, do all the electrical tuneup stuff first. You won't be able to set the carb properly unless the timing, plugs, etc., are OK.
Once you know you have ignition, try adjusting the idle mixture screw on the carb. Start with it screwed out about 1-1/2 turns and work from there. There should be a point at which the engine runs worse if you turn it either out (richer) or in (leaner.) If adjusting the screw won't get it to idle at all, I'm guessing the jet is clogged and needs to be cleaned (in fact, the whole carb may need a rebuild.) If it idles but changing the jet doesn't change how it idles, my first guess would be an air leak.
