I had the impression there were some '74 models imported, but not to quibble. Anything later would have been made for the Euro market. I think there will be very few of these in the states. If you are stuck on a later-model, look carefully into the hassles surrounding importation of a non-US spec car, especially in regard to emissions. It can be done, the question is do you want to jump through the hoops. I think that a good example already here is better than a bad newer Euro example. Your age range for cars is 25+ years for latest Euro production, 31+ years for last US imports. Anyone considering either option is already nuts, so go for it.

My suggestion would be to look for a premium example already in-country. Excellent cars can be had in the $4-8K range without having to search out a car on another continent, take somebody's word for condition or go yourself to check it out, ship it, hassle the import situation, yadayadayada.

As to the AC situation I don't have a lot of info to contribute. I think AC was an option on later year US imports but probably was rarely fitted and mostly they don't work any more anyhow. If I needed AC on my Saab I would talk to Glenn Kenner in Metarie LA about how to do it. It can be done.
