This is one of those Erik Carlsson stories that often pops up, and it is indeed true. It happened somewhere in Africa, and the scenario is that he got stuck in a BIG mud hole. There was no stable ground in front or behind the car so pushing would have taken forever. However, there was firm ground to the side, so just rolling the car one full revolution was the quickest way to go, and (according to Erik) the easiest to coordinate the spectators helping out thru...
Erik didn't win this particular rally, but the mudhole stunt maneuver stole the show, so to speak, to the level where the winning team (ford, if i recall right) found it all very annoying - SAAB getting all the press even without winning. So at the prize ceremony, the ford people, in an effort to steal the show back (after all they had won) flipped their car over on the roof too, planning to do a full revolution and end up on the wheels again. Only trouble was they did this INDOORS, in the fancy venue where the ceremony was held - which was a not too well thought over thing to do. The hard floor was a bit too slippery, so once the car was on its roof it became impossible to get it back on its wheels - the roof was too flat and there was no grip. So battery acid and engine oil spilled like crazy and more or less wrecked the venue.
