Bench testing a used transmission

I bought a used transmission for my 96 and would like to flush it out and "run" it on the work bench to try to see if I can find anything obviously wrong with it before I install it in the car. Does anyone have any pointers on how to spin the transmission, how to shift gears (on the work bench) and anything I should look/listen for in the process? Are there ways to test the freewheeling during all of this?
Thanks.
