After putting new rings and bearings, water pump, clutch disk and fresh pressure plate into my newer ('73) 1.7 liter engine, and dropping it into
the '70 96, I was closing in on getting it started up in time for the
local Mem. Day parade, from which I have been absent, lo these many years.
I was going to do it right this time; loosen the valve clearance b/4 I torqued the heads, time the distributor while the valve cover was off so I could "rock" the pushrods on #4, etc., et al. Thursday coming down the stretch, I put the alternator on, the radaiator, filled it with oil and water and connected the ground cable. Giving the engine bay one last look over, I settled into the cockpit relishing that rush of adrenaline and satisfaction when a newly refurbished engine springs to life! I turned the key and all I got was a scream from the starter. I tried it several times with the same result. I took it off and took it 30 miles to the local starter/alternator expert who had rebuilt it. He hooked it up to his battery: it spun and the starter gear cranked out just like it should. "Sometimes it just takes a touch!" he said with a grin. I retraced
the 30 miles, replaced the starter, and got the same scream. And here I sit; Parade day 3 days away, the laughing stock of the town: "The Village
Idiot with that crazy pile of junk! Call the Compacter! " Any suggestions?
