I've finally found some free time to work on Saab stuff, and I've got quite a few questions...I was given a good working transmission for my 96, and bench tested it a little (Bellhousing is still on) The results were great, no play whatsoever when rotating the drivers in opposite directions, all shifts well by hand. But, where is neutral? Or is that part of the freewheel bearing thing. That I still don't understand. I want to test my transmission with the freewheel disengaged. I've heard people bypass the freewheel, but why? If it's broken, can you just not use it? And in what kind of driving conditions is it used? I also pick up a '68 wagon for $100. New upholstery on front seats, strong motor, great tires, a perfect windshield and some other things that I need. The transmission whined, the owner did a few steps to get it ready to pull, and lost interest. I'm going to flush it out and get the car running. So on both cars, I need the "tapered pin" that holds the car's shifter to the trans. gear selector at the u-joint. Will anything work here, like a nut and bolt, or do I need to locate these parts? If the trans is good on the wagon...I may end up letting best friend/college roomate drive it around at school for the next two years. If the trans is bad, but still works, is it really a problem to keep driving it? It will just be a Bellingham around-town beater. 2 saabs for $400 total! Who would have thought. P.S...the wagon middle and back seats are gone...it I get it drving, anyone have these in WA? And if it won't drive, anyone need a rust-free 95 body? I'd love to see it live on. These cars are fun, and I love them.
