I am not positive, but I think a worn inner "T" joint and receiver cup could produce this effect. Or possibly the needle bearings are lost or worn out. The classic remedy for this is to remove the axle shafts, and swap the inner stub axles/cups from side to side. If they were badly worn,
this could cause major movement of the tran. case, and especially in reverse.
