The door switch completes the ground connection. The wire from the lamp to the door switch is technically 'hot' when a good bulb is installed.
Remove the bulb, open the door, and use an ohm meter to check for continuity between any chassis ground point and the non-positive side of the lamp socket.
The socket to chassis circuit should have little or no resistance with the door open and an infinite resistance (also known as an open circuit) with the switch pressed as if the door were shut.
The switch and its ground contact may not be as low resistance as is needed to perming sufficient current to flow through the filament, or the wire lead from the lamp socket to the switch may be defective.
