Shift lever pulls out of joint

Hello to all,
I have been happily driving my little '71 96 around for a few months now and really enjoying it. I went to put it in reverse today and found the the shift lever pulled out way to far and although it jammed up a little. If I push the lever back in (toward the column) it would shift through the gears but when I try to put in reverse chances are it will pull out to far again and go into 2nd instead of reverse.
Now if I finess by pulling back and then pulling out gently I can still get it to go to reverse but something is very wrong. Can anyone tell me what the problem may be and how to fix it? Also, I am guessing this is a hard to find part. Would any of you have the part?
Thanks so much, Drew
