If your car is running now (even roughly), it is getting air, fuel, and spark. Work carefuly and it'll be hard to mess that up. If something goes wrong, just identify which of those three things is missing and solve that problem. (HINT: it shouldn't be the spark since you don't have to touch that system to replace the carb.)
What is involved in installing the new carb? A fuel line, two nuts, a gasket or two, and a throttle linkage? Maybe a choke cable, and a fuel cutoff.
If you got the carb from Chip, I'd just go for it. I assume that Chip insured that it has the correct jets, float level and drop. I think the hardest trouble I had installing mine (not from Chip), was figuring out how to remove the aluminium spacer to fit the air filter.
Think of Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music, or the lion in the wizard of Oz. All you need is a bit of confidence or courage.
Once you are done enough (an hour or so if you work methodically and carefully), you 'll fire up the engine and begin adjusting your idle speed and mixture, amazed that you used to think it would be hard to do. Installing the choke cable and fitting the air filter may take a bit longer, but you'll feel ready for those simple tasks after a few laps around the block.
You should trust that you can reinstall the old carb if something doesn't work out, but I'd try calling Chip before reverting to that.
You CAN do it. Once it is on, you 'll think there was nothing to it.
