The freewheel lockout should only be used if you need to push start the car, or you need engine braking on steep down grades as per the owner's manual. It's a very flimsy set of engaging teeth which are easily worn to the point that they will not stay engaged. I would not be surprised if the transmission was also under designed knowing the freewheeling would take the load off the transmission bearings and shafts while in use. It's the best unique feature of the car, use it and don't beat on it, just enjoy it.
