You probably have a dirty gas tank. Even with filters the specs of grit get into the float valve and causing the carb to flood. Take the top off the carb and you will find dirt in the carb bowl. My car was flooded and backfired on trying to start it and set the carb on fire so I would suggest a carb cleaning and a tank cleaning.
