Advice on new engine rebuild oil usage

My new engine rebuild (1.7L) has about 5000 miles on it. Pinto pistons, slightly higher compression, some head polishing, 2-bbl, MSS exhaust.
Since the rebuild, it has consistently used about 1/2 quart of oil per tank of gas. This seems high to me, but I'm looking for some expert advice. Should I take it back and ask them to check it over? What should I suggest they look for?
I called the mechanic and he said he thought it my be my rings (moly-something?) needing to break in. I'm not using synthetic oil.
