I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but I have been a little concerned about keeping my 96 running for many years to come simply because the experts on these cars (and I am speaking mainly about the tranny) are getting up there in age. My tranny has been making some gear noise. There's no whine yet, but I have been thinking about going ahead and shipping my tranny to Jack Lawrence now for a fresh rebuild because he and the only other expert that I know of cannot work forever, right? They are already working MUCH longer than most people are capable, and from what I understand by what I have heard, these guys are quite amazing.
I am wondering - is there something being done NOW to get others up to speed on these trannys. The knowledge that these guys have on these cars will be lost unless other capable people get up to speed and fairly soon. My 96 is my daily driver and I plan to drive it until I cannot drive anymore(hopefully many years:-), but I do wonder if that will be possible. I don't mean to be a worry wort - just trying to keep it real and plan ahead. I would like to think there are others already very capable of rebuilding these trannys, but that may not be the case. I don't know.
Another concern regarding these trannys is parts. How much longer can these trannys be rebuilt by using parts from other used trannys?
I know that as needs arise, solutions are usually worked out, but I am just wondering what actions are being done now.
If you were me, would you go ahead and send in the tranny now or wait for it to whine (possibly years down the road)?
THANKS!
