Engining reving

I have a 95 SAAB 900SE. I have been trying to learn to fix my own car lately. Yesterday the engine starting reving when I am stopped and have the break on. Can someone tell me what to check? I thought it might be an egr valve but when I went to the saab parts place the guy acted like I was stupid and said they do not replace many of those. he wanted b to have someone there check it out. any ideas of what it can be?
