Newbie with an engine oil question

For the past 30 years I've owned several 99s, 900s, and 9000s, and have always had them serviced by certified Saab mechanics. I've decided to start working on my own cars, like I used to when I was a lot younger. And what better way to exercise my unused mechanical skills than to work on a Saab 96 with a V4!
I just purchased a 1971 Saab 96, that has basically been sitting since 1992, from a guy who bought it from the original owner one year ago. He said he started it up once last year and the engine sounded fine, but he couldn't drive it because the clutch slave cylinder needed rebuilt. He never got around to rebuilding it and then sold the car to me.
The oil on the dipstick smells more like gas than oil, so I don't dare try to start it without changing the oil first. I've researched this board trying find out what engine oil I should use before starting a V4 that has been sitting so long. I found a lot of very useful information regarding what kind of transmission oil, but what about engine oil. I'd sure be grateful for any recommendations.
