Good question. I do not have the Final Answer. I will offer the partial answer, that certain 2-stroke marine engines could run either way, and were in fact intentionally put into backwards operation to reverse movement of the ship. You may wish to search June Munktell or Scandia Diesel for further information.
These reflections are a little far from your question. Most 2-cycle engines will run backwards as well as forwards. Depending on the fuel delivery system and spark timing, some may not.
