Rust is the biggest enemy on a 96. Check the rear of the engine compartment where it joins with the engine bay floor, shock towers inside & out, floor under the front mats and rear seat, trunk spare tire compartment.
Tranny is 2nd biggest area. Is it quiet in all gears? Shift smoothly? Freewheel work? Remove tranny drain plug and check for metal shavings. Shavings = damage.
Finally, engine. Check compression, check bottom pulley for slop. Slop = counter balance bearings shot = rebuild soon.
