"Is there a way to test whether the problem is bearings or not?"
Not exactly without disassembly, but there are ways to make a pretty good guess. My first move would be, remove the accessory belt(s). You cannot judge play in the front balancer shaft bearing without that step, the belt puts tenswion on the bearing that interferes with the measurement. Now, pull the balance pulley up and down and side to side. With a new bearing you should feel no movement. If you can make it wobble in any direction, there is wear. Teaching you how much is OK is hardly possible over the internet. If it goes up-and-down 1/8", yer dead, major wear. 1/64", some wear probably approaching or exceeding mfr limits. .001", that's OK.
"Is there a chance that the bearings are fine and that a good cleaning of the pickup screen would restore normal oil pressure?"
Little to none, Not impossible but not likely.
