The core turns inside the sheath. What happens is that the core starts to catch on the sheath and it bounces wildly as it catches. This is a very stressful situation for the cable and something has to give! Sometimes the core breaks- in that case, when you twist the gearbox end, nothing happens to the speedo. Not your problem. Other times the end that fits into the gearbox fails. Might be your problem. The plastic drive gear inside the gearbox can even fail. The violent movement can also put stress on the speedo itself. The odometer is the weak point and a plastic drive gear can crack.
If this ever starts to happen, disconnect the cable at the gearbox end immediately. Remove the entire cable when you get home and lube the core. Make sure there are "gentle bends" as it snakes to the speedo.
