Greetings Listers
Promised an engine rebuild update so here it is.
I combined my running 1970 96 and a spare 1700cc Sonett engine using the good parts from both to lower costs.
Using the ported heads from the spare hardened seats were installed, skimmed, and fitted with the stock valves from the runner. The 1700 crank was in spec. and received a polishing. Connecting rods magnafluxed and peaned. flywheel resurfaced and the exhaust dounuts bored to match the sport exhaust system. Cylinders bored .032 over. New pistons to match, all new engine bearings including the fan, rebuilt and peaned clutch cover, new T.O. bearing and clutch disk, and a new oil pump to ensure reliability. Engine rebuild total was $2351.
I chose MSS for the transmission rebuild. Not only the closest expert,Jack also supplied engine parts and provided a wealth of knowledge. He combined the best of both transmissions and supplied some "unobtainium" from his personal stash. Transmission rebuild total was $1314.
Numerous parts store trips for sundries such as oil, filters, gaskets,
hoses, fasteners, antifreeze and various tubes of goop added over $200. Adding the 2bbl intake and carb found me spending another $120 on Weber parts. Naturally it would not breathe without another $320 for an exhaust system to match.
When was all said and done the grand total was just about $3,000.
Once all of the parts were piled up in my garage Thursday evening I began the marathon of assembly. Everything went together without any major mishaps. I did cause myself some grief due to poor attention to details, such as forgetting to install the inner drivers and setting the engine to TDC BEFORE installing the engine into the car. This cost me some additional time and labor. Anyone listening in would have thought Homer Simpson was the mechanic. On Saturday nite at 11:30pm I held my breath and turned the key---Backfire from the carb---(see engine timing above). Turn distributor 180deg. and it roared to life on the first turn of the key!!
Subsequent test drives have been great. Some minor adjustments and re-torquing are required but it is a changed machine. Having compression on all four cylinders sure makes a difference. More torque, less shifting and Boy when that 2bbl kicks in...
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone on this list who helped with technical advice and encouragement for this project. As you know these cars are rare and unique. They do not enjoy the aftermarket support other collector cars have. Without the dedication, knowledge, and willingness to help from the Saabaholics, this restoration would not have been possible.
Happy Holidays
