Original early racks are unobtanium... JCWhitney actually has an acceptable style for a VW that with very minimal adjustment, fits just fine on the roof and has wood-slats and the 'curve' front-to-back-across that looks better. The whole rack sits a tad higher than the original ones though. It runs about $250 if I recall. I had a custom rack rack built that is lower and uses heavier steel. I wrote an article about the process last year in Vintage Views. A picture of it is available at pedroracks - com in the "others" tab. Including shipping it was just over $400.
