Kansas, thanks for your insight. It was definietly the sensation of the clutch being disengaged without letting up on the accelerator. The car had not been driven for a few months so maybe there was some gear oil on the clutch plate. For now it has resolved itself; I suspect there is a seal replacement in my future.
