I see you have already moved towards a solution but I will tell you what I did in that situation when I had to put the car back into service immediately with perfectly adjusted brakes... ingenuity is the mother of invention...err... fool me twice... anyhow...
I used a Dremel tool with a reinforced cut-off wheel to do some creative "field machining" cutting a new square on the nearly ample stud left behind. This is a good lesson in why to use PB Blaster and heat, etc, before forcing things!
