For anyone who is going to modify the existing timing cover by cutting off the "snout" that houses the fan pulley bearing.
Please note that, at least on a 1973 96 V4, you have to cut off almost all the way flush to the timing cover in order to extract the fan bearing which is pressed in from the back of the timing cover. I didn't cut off flush because it's almost impossible to do with an angle grinder cutoff wheel. Maybe left about three eighths inch of the snout. This leaves a nice half inch deep 30mm hole for plugging with a freeze out plug. NAPA has them for 99 cents. The hole still required a little reaming out with a dremel tool to get the freeze out plug to pound in.
When you cut off the snout, of course you have to cut through the 3 structural fins that are an integral part of the timing cover face.
I will post a couple of pics in hopes this will help someone else that wants to do this modification. It sure is a lot cheaper than buying a modified timing cover plate.
