Glad I got you thinking- I think my post was a bit rambling to say the least.
I just replaced the starter in one of my cars last week. Actually, replaced it twice. The first time the solenoid stuck ON, so the starter motor wouldn't turn off until I disconnected the battery! I swapped in what I thought was a good starter, only to have it labor. Second one I ran on the floor and it works just fine. I went through 6 or 8 starters and found 3 good ones, a dead one or two, and then a couple that drew a ton of current. Hence, my thoughts on the starter being a possible big current drain. BTW- to replace the starter, I jack the motor slightly and remove the driver's side motor mount completely. Makes the job a snap!
