Hi,
If you look at where the cable goes into the transmission, there's a big nut that holds the cable fitting to the transmission. You should be able to get a socket on it and remove it. There's a paper gasket that comes out with it- I'm pretty sure you won't spill any gear oil, but go slowly just in case. On the end will be a plastic gear. You might want to pull that out and just check it- it could be stripped. I can probably come up with a used one for you if that's the case.
Other than that, does the transmission work okay? Freewheel work? Whining in any particular gears? IE, any other signs of problems?
