Follow up - got lots of great suggestions off the vSaab group - thanks guys.
Ended up replacing the timing cover, reinstalling the stock water pump just as an idler pulley (I have an electric water pump). Tom Shipman is helping me craft and install a rear alternator bracket like Saab added in later years.
I’ll let you know if the buzzing is solved.
