I recently repaired my 2 stroke shift lever so the mechanics are fresh in my mind…
The shift lever is actually a lever. The inner tip inserts into a round hole at the top of the end of the long shift rod. This is all hidden inside the gray housing on the steering column. The shift rod runs next to the steering column, ends at a universal joint that is connected to the transmission. The four forward gears are arranged in a standard “H” pattern 1st is upper near the steering wheel, 2nd is lower near the steering wheel, 3rd is upper towards the dash and 4th is lower toward the dash. The shift rod is spring loaded to push towards the steering wheel for 1st and 2nd. Pulling the shift lever in towards your chest pushes the shift rod towards the engine and allows you to go to 3rd and 4th. Pulling the shift lever out towards the passenger side should only allow you to pull out and down for reverse.
I would not dismantle anything until much closer inspection. Is the shift rod jammed and not springing back automatically towards the steering wheel to access 1st and 2nd? Is there some type of jam at the universal joint or a problem with the spring on the shift rod? Try pushing the shift lever towards the dash (mimicking the springs function) and see if it goes into 1st. If all looks good I would then disconnect the universal joint at the low connection. It is a taper pin; remove the nut on the bottom and screw it on to the top of the pin it will force the pin out. Once disengaged, check the workings of the shift lever to see if it springs appropriately in and out. If it moves freely I would then suspect motor mounts (usually the fix for many shifting issues).
Best of luck.
