I'm late to this party by many years, but after researching the engine in my recently acquired 69-96 I found the following information that seems accurate:
The engine number and date code are on the front upper left side of the block. The date code is tucked under the temperature sender and is more easily seen by pulling the wire off the sender.
The first number of the date code is the year of manufacture, the next character, a letter, is the month, and the last two numbers are the day. For example, my engine has the date code 2J19, so it was manufactured in 1972 on October 19th (J is the 10th letter of the alphabet).
My understanding is that from 1971 on, 96 engines were all 1700 cc, so it appears I have a 1700.
