I've reassembled my Sonett stroker waterpump housing with new replacement components and find that the bearing shaft is shorter than the one that was removed. Pressing the impeller onto the bearing shaft to "..flush with the stub, but not more than 0.016 in. (0.4mm) under the sealing surface of the pump housing..." and watching it by eye for 'flush', I find I've already pressed it on the shaft to a 0.024" (0.6mm) clearance from the reference housing edge. There is still clearance between the forward (hub end) of the impeller and cast housing. It all spins just fine.
I'm unable to remove the drive pulley hub for the purpose of pressing the bearing, shaft and impeller out enough to install a puller on the impeller to pull it off the shaft to the specified clearance.
My questions / requests for advice are:
Would you ignore that clearance increase? The gasket, not included in the measurement process, is a bit over 1 mm thick, so the as-assembled clearance, with gasket, would have gone from .4 mm to 1.5 mm. Or, in my current situation, goes from .6mm to 1.7 mm. Is that .2mm difference (13% more clearance) worrisome enough to warrant replacing the new impeller to the proscribed clearance?
Should I forgo that gasket and use a sealant only? Would you feel comfortable to use the resulting .6 mm of the present as-pressed clearance, plus whatever sealant film thickness is obtained, if this were your pump to go in your just-rebuilt motor?
Would you make a thinner paper gasket as a compensation for pressing the impeller too far?
