I had a similar problem with my 68 Sonett. After installing lower mounts to make room for a 2 barrel Weber the first startup sounded like the flywheel was tearing the starter apart. turned out it was vibration from the starter resting on the chassi. Just took a little metal off the chassi with a grinder or file.
