90wt will damage gearbox.....

Because it is too thick. Just for diagnostic purposes I would drain and refill with 10/30 motor oil and see if it makes a difference .
But I would still think the gearbox is on its way out. I use Redline MTL in those gearboxes. I have also rebuilt a bunch of them, they have a bunch of ball bearings and a few roller bearings. They also have a quite complex system of oil slingers and small oil passages to lubricate the bearings. The noise you describe is very consistent with a failing pinion bearing, which will eventually damage the ring and pinion. Good Luck!
