I believe there may be some errors here. Later 99's have a threaded post on the top of the pump shaft. There were ( 3 ) versions of the pump on the later B engines. Only the earliest of these had a bolt, the later ones were both threaded posts, Version #2 used a nut to hold the impeller. The factory manual warns to not use a slide hammer ! ! ! The greatest risk in B engine repair is damage to the gear on the idler shaft when changing water pumps. Using an impact method for pump removal risks breaking teeth on the gear. You will probably need to drill and tap the top of the broken shaft to provide a pull mount. The factory tool works very well, but I have also changed several using (2) Stanley Wonderbars and a fender washer on the top of the shaft. Be gentle. I have also had the car in gear so I can push gently to turn the gear as I pull the shaft. Can't remember whether its turning the engine forward or backward that helps the gear disengage. Find a manual that explains this process and proceed with caution. Many dead 99's around with only a broken gear, but the new shaft is expensive, used shafts are getting hard to find, and you must pull the engine to change a shaft. Also make sure what pump you need as there were also a ( 12 ) cog gear on later engines and a ( 6 ? ) on earlier, and the new pump must be the same gear as the old. Go for a new pump, I have had very bad luck with rebuilds, I believe becouse new seals don't want to seal on a shaft worn even slightly by another seal.Good luck.
