I think the best way to go here is to leave the four-speed in what's a really fabulous and historic car... I too, have thought about a longer gear in my 99, and apparently the four-speeds are more reliable and have gear ratios which more closely match the engine.

And for legs on the highway, going with the original high-profile tires over the more common low-profile 900T style can help a lot.
