My 1980 99 GLi (non-turbo) has been humming lately. At first I thought it was humming because it didn't know the words, but if I shift into neutral and coast, I still hear it. It sounds like tire noise, or a resonance, and goes up and down according to the car's speed. There's no ticking sound or chugging that I can hear or feel. The tire pressures are ok, so I'm assuming it's time for new wheel bearings.
The shop I go to wants $300 per side (parts and labor) to replace the front wheel bearings. Having just spent money fixing the 900, and being about to spend lots of money upgrading the lights, I'm considering doing this myself (with a friend). My question is: How difficult a job is this? My friend has a bearing press (which he used on his Pantera), but I've heard it's a pain in the neck job. Could I (who can change brake pads and valve cover gaskets, but hasn't tried this) do this job? Would the difference in cost be worth the frustration?
TIA
