My advice to anyone thinking of buying *any* car is to take it to someone who knows the particular make and model very well and have them check the car over throughly before purchasing it. It is better to spend an hours labor to have a car checked out than to buy it and then have to pay huge repair bills. I've had people buy cars despite my recommending that they look for another one, but at least they were warned of what they might expect.
A compression check on the engine will tell you the condition of the valves and rings.
A pressure test on the cooling system will tell you the condition of the system and a combustion gas test will tell you if the head gasket leaks. Test the battery, starter and charging system and do a visual inspection of the wiring. In particular check the fuel pump fuse sockets in the fusebox for a weak connection. I've known of a couple failures in '78 99's.
Look for leaks around the windows and rear hatch. I've had leaks around the windshield that caused a puddle in the front footwell during rainy weather.
Check suspension bushings, including the steering rack and the rear axle.
Check the brakes including checking for hydraulic leaks.
