The most important thing is to change the fluid regularly. These transmissions use ball bearings rather than roller beraings and they require clean lubricant. Ball bearings have all of the load on one point of the ball, whereas rollers spread the load out. If grit gets into the ball bearings they wear much faster than roller bearings would. The Spec in the SAAB Service Manual is for SAE 80 EP meaning Extreme Pressure. I've been trying to remember whether the Castrol specs on the chart that we had where I worked in New Hampshire were for GL-4 or GL-5, but it has just been too many years since I saw that chart. "kansas" is right about GL-4 or GL-5 depending on the cut of the gears, but in the SAAB 95/96/97 trans there may have been a compromise in the specs due to the fact that the differential shares the oil with the rest of the gears. GL-4 or GL-5 will work. In thirty years of working on cars I've never heard that the additives in GL-5 damage brass parts, but that doesn't mean "kansas" is wrong. I've used petroleum based and synthetic gear oil and I think the synthetic actually makes for smother shifting. It is expensive, though and in a transmission in which the oil should be changed regularly, the expense adds up fast. The Service Manual says to check the fluid every 6,000 miles and change it every 12,000 miles. In an older car, especially one that you have no idea of it's service history, I would recommend doing another change in 3,000 miles then following the SAAB Manual specs. Clean the outside of the case and keep an eye on it to see if and where it leaks. Pull the trans and replace the seals if necessary.
