Thing is, out here in OZ it's so da*n hot even if it does thicken the oil, the heat will compensate by thinning it again, and the extra 'slipperiness' will slow the wear on the internal components. My theory being that the original spec oil isn't up to protecting the 'boxes [and there isn't a great deal of choice of alternative oil] in these temperatures. In Britain I can't remember anyone having a lot of g/box problems [except for early 99s with freewheel] even on cars with astranomical mileages, but out here it's a REAL regular occurance; hence the suppostion that it's heat and not use related.
My local Saab specialist recommends retro-fitting g/box oil coolers to any saabs that it can be done on for precicely this reason. Seems to work too... They do a LOT of gearbox rebuilds so they seem know what they're on about - they're also doing themeselves out of work by recommending the 'fix'!
