You say that this is a '74 , but that it has mechanical injection. If it is a '74 model year car then the only way it will have mechanical injection is if it was converted. '74 cars had the Bosch D-Jetronic electronic injection. If the car was built in *late* '74, it is a '75 model year car (serial number will be 9975...) and would have the mechanical Bosch K-Jetronic, also known as CIS (Constant Injection System) with the big rubber bellows at the throttle intake.
I will reinterate what I've said many times before on this forum: Check the mechanical condition of the engine first (a compression check and valve adjustment will tell you a lot about what's happening mechanically), then the electrical system condition (ignition, spark delivery). Only when these are varified to be correct should you work on the fuel system. If either of the others is bad/off working on the injection will only make the problems worse.
If you let me know which injection you have, I can give you some pointers as to what you might check/adjust. I know the electronic system quite well even though I haven't worked on any cars with it for a number of years. CIS is easy by comparison because 90% of the time problems with it are caused by a vacuum leak.
