Well, I suppose one thing you could do is put the points back in :(
Seriously, there's a procedure in the Pertronix instruction leaflet for making a temporary wiring change that's supposed to let you troubleshoot some kinds of problems. Don't have my leaflet handy -- it's out in the garage -- but can get it later if you're desperate.
I wouldn't condemn the Pertronix too quickly, though, as there aren't any moving parts and hardly anything to go wrong with it. I say this because back in the spring I had the experience of doing some other work in the area of the distributor, after which suddenly the car wouldn't start and I was sure the Pertronix module was screwed up. I tested and wiggled and did everything I could think of to it with no luck. I was just about resigned to digging the points and condenser out of the box where I had stashed them, and re-installing them to localize the problem.
It was at that point, though, that I discovered that the wire from the distributor to the low-tension side of the coil was rotten. The connector looked fine, and the wire outside the connector looked fine, but once I twisted it around and looked really closely, I could see that the wire INSIDE the plastic body of the connector had deteriorated and there were only a couple of strands still making contact. I probably had pulled it out while working in the area of the distributor, without noticing it. I removed the connector, snipped off the bad piece of wire, stripped the insulation and put the connector back on the fresh wire, and suddenly my "defective Pertronix module" was working perfectly again!
