I tell people time and again on these boards and on the e-mail lists that before they start messing up their fuel system they should _always_ check the mechanical condition of the engine _first_, then the electrical/ignition condition. When I worked as a mechanic there were more times than I can count where people had screwed with their carb and it cost them more in the long run becuase I not only had to make whatever repairs were needed, but I had to undo what they'd done to the carb.
I wasn't sure that I was reading it right recently when I did a compression check because I felt that the gauge wasn't screwing in very far and thought it was not sealing correctly. I had two adjacent cylinders on my '78 99L that were reading 60psi, usually an indication of a blown head gasket between the two cylinders. When I pulled the head, I found _two_ burnt exhaust valves and the holes were nearly identical, which is why the readings were the same. I suspect that somebody had a valve job done on it and that it wasn't done properly. The car had passed the DEQ emissions test in September, but someone had removed the catalyst (_not_ a requirement for 49-state Federal emissions in 1978, but most western cars had them because they were imported through California) so they wouldn't pass it. I finally got the cat system off of another car fitted, ...and it didn't pass. That's why I was taking the compression check. Finally passed a couple of days ago.
